“3 Idiots” is a Bollywood film that follows the lives of three engineering students, Farhan Qureshi, Raju Rastogi, and Ranchoddas “Rancho” Shamaldas Chanchad, at the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering in India. Farhan and Raju are average students struggling under the immense pressure and expectations of their families, while Rancho is a free-spirited and brilliant student who believes in passionate learning over rote memorization. Rancho’s unconventional methods and constant questioning of the education system put him at odds with the strict and traditional college director, Viru Sahastrabuddhe, nicknamed “Virus.” Despite this, Rancho’s approach to learning inspires Farhan and Raju, and they gradually start to embrace his philosophy, leading to various comedic and poignant situations. Along the way, Rancho also falls in love with Virus’s daughter, Pia, and the trio navigates the challenges and pressures of their academic life together.

The narrative intertwines the present day, where Farhan and Raju set out on a road trip to find their long-lost friend Rancho, with flashbacks of their college days. Through this journey, they reflect on their experiences and the impact Rancho had on their lives. They eventually discover that Rancho’s real name is Phunsukh Wangdu, a highly successful scientist and innovator who had assumed another student’s identity to study without familial pressure. The film concludes with a reunion where Rancho, now Phunsukh, reaffirms the value of pursuing one’s passion and the importance of a more humane and creative approach to education. “3 Idiots” ultimately highlights the flaws of the rigid educational system and promotes the idea that true success comes from following one’s dreams and thinking differently.
