Split Plot Summary:
In “Split,” three teenage girls, Casey, Claire, and Marcia, are kidnapped by a man named Kevin Wendell Crumb, who has dissociative identity disorder (DID). Kevin has 23 distinct personalities, including a meticulous and controlling persona named Dennis. The girls are taken to an underground facility where they encounter different personalities, including Patricia, a stern woman, and Hedwig, a nine-year-old boy. They learn that a terrifying 24th personality, known as “The Beast,” is about to emerge and poses a grave threat to their lives.
As the girls attempt to escape, Casey forms a bond with some of Kevin’s more sympathetic personalities. Dr. Karen Fletcher, Kevin’s psychiatrist, begins to suspect that something is wrong and investigates, but she is ultimately killed by The Beast. When The Beast finally emerges, he exhibits superhuman strength and abilities, killing Claire and Marcia. Casey manages to survive by appealing to Kevin’s original personality and showing her scars from past abuse, which causes The Beast to spare her, recognizing her as “pure.” The movie ends with Kevin still at large, hinting at a larger connection to other events in Shyamalan’s film universe.
