In “The Ring,” a journalist named Rachel Keller investigates the mysterious death of her niece Katie, who died suddenly after watching a strange videotape. The tape is rumored to be cursed, causing anyone who watches it to die seven days later. Rachel finds the tape, watches it, and receives a chilling phone call informing her that she has seven days to live. Desperate to uncover the truth and save herself, Rachel enlists the help of her ex-boyfriend Noah and her young son Aidan. Together, they discover the tape’s origins and the story of a vengeful spirit named Samara.
As the days tick down, Rachel and Noah uncover that Samara was a young girl with psychic abilities who was adopted and mistreated by her parents. Samara’s mother, driven to madness by her daughter’s powers, eventually killed her by throwing her into a well. The videotape is revealed to be a manifestation of Samara’s curse, her way of seeking revenge. Rachel realizes the only way to break the curse is to make a copy of the tape and show it to someone else, thus continuing the cycle. The movie ends with Rachel frantically making a copy to save her son’s life, leaving the curse unresolved for others to fall victim to.
