There was a time when Bollywood was known just for the glitz and glamour, but slowly started moving toward other Hollywood factors that as special effects (VFX) no matter what reality it is happening here. We decided to look at 20 Bollywood Films with the Worst CGI & VFX that left audiences more puzzled than astounded. Whether it was some bad creatures, over-fueled action or something semantics we always miss from the good guys; these films either went into reality heaven for CGI trickery and those efforts failed to backpack them around.
Bollywood Movies with Worst CGI and VFX
1: Adipurush (2023)
Adman tops the list is one such movie that received a lot of backlash regarding its CGI. While the movie had visual effects done on a huge scale, it left much to be desired especially in portraying mythical roots and overall led to dispirited viewers.
2: Ra.One (2011)
“Ra. The previous entry in this list had a whole world of expectations behind it, but the skyscraper-high fidelity level we were expecting for its CGI sequences was not to be found within “One.” The superhero scenes, which should have been the high point of the film, ended up looking more like video game cutscenes than a Bollywood blockbuster.
3: Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022)
While the usage of VFX in Brahmāstra was ambitious, it had only mixed results. Although many scenes were lauded, some other moments in particular ones with the mystical weapons – which one wore as its costume for a better part of the comic’s life up to the present day.were scrutinized due to them being too much and senselessly conducted.
4: Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002)
A cult classic (in the worst possible way), “Jaani Dushman” is famous for its ludicrous CGI. The items supernatural aspects were done so terribly poorly that it turned the movie into an unintentional laugh riot.
5: Thugs of Hindostan (2018)
Thugs of Hindostan wanted to be an epic old-school adventure but failed so much in its CGI. Its special effects (especially the naval battles) were criticized for their lack of realism and execution.
6: Love Story 2050 (2008)
It seemed like a visual disaster that everything was released in 2050 to see “Love Story. The CGI-heavy scenes, in particular showcasing Mumbai of the future, were embarrassingly poor and adversely impacted what could have been a reasonably good film.
7: Aabra Ka Daabra (2004)
The film to become India’s first 3D release, Aabra Ka Daabra failed to win hearts and proved particularly letdown due to its outdated CGI. The whole point of the movie was the magic, and they pulled it off in amateurishly hacksawed design.
8: Krrish 3 (2013)
“Krrish 3”, although did well at the overall box office, was slammed by many for its average CGI. Criticism focused on what were considered to be poor special effects depicting the mutant creatures and action set pieces that failed to live up to their predecessors.
9: The Legend of Drona (2008)
This movie also leans towards the fantasy realm however, was let down by excessive use of bad CGI “Drona” The swooping mysticism read less like wonder and more like an unintentionally misbegotten visual disaster.
10: Aladin (2009)
Viewers’ expectations were high from across-the-board stars but ‘Aladdin left them visually disappointed. Even the CGI, and especially so for all of its interpretations of a genie was extremely poor giving off an almost lacklustre feel to it at the end which made what little magic this film had going look terrible.
11: Prem Aggan (1998)
The supernatural elements in “Prem Aggan”, on the other hand, were meant to be spectacular but came off as farcical since these effects employed some sordid-looking special effects. Although the storyline is often overshadowed by its sometimes less-than-stellar special effects.
12: Prince (2010)
While “Prince” was advertised as a slick, action thriller its over-dependence on Computer-generated scenes took all the charm away from good stunts making many sequences appear to be half-baked which reduced the overall thrill.
13: Koi… Mil Gaya (2003)
While “Koi. While “Koi. Mil Gaya” is still remembered fondly for its narrative, the CGI that brought alien Jadoo to life now looks dated. Unfortunately, the special effects while innovative for their time are not as impressive by now.
14: Bhoothnath Returns (2014)
The film had a good storyline but was slightly let down by subpar CGI in the supernatural scenes. Ghostly sequences might have been believed more, but uniqueness should be on the visual side maybe it was lacking final lack depth.
15: Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007)
The 1st biggie Jhoom Barabar Jhoom also mixed CGI with their dances, but the impact was so bad that instead of enhancing it became a pain to one’s eye.
16: Jajantaram Mamantaram (2003)
This movie was inspired by Gulliver’s Travels and showed a world full of giants and tiny people, strictly in CGI. It fell short of the mark and became rather awkwardly silly with poorly implemented effects that diminished any impression they hoped to bestow.
17: Action Replayy (2010)
Action Replayy did a great job with the set designs in which CGI was tried for depicting time travel and futuristic elements but that too isn’t properly justified visually. It was often blasted for its camp and cheesy effects, the FX not living up to what would have been possible with a 60 crore INR budget.
18: Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008)
This magical fantasy film was cluttered with ugly CGI effects. Even most of the sound died with Chloe’s grace muttering, and it was also a poor implementation of visuals that made fairy godmother scenes terrible to look at.
19: Jal (2014)
As per the reports “Jal” received a lot of appreciation for its story, but had poor CGI work especially while portraying scenes featuring natural disasters. It tells a powerful message, but the effects are so average that you lose what little impact it may have in its narrative.
20: Veer (2010)
Veer (Historical Epic with ambition but bad CGI). In general, the film was hard to look at since the battle scenes in particular (which are supposed to be spectacular) were dismal.
